Some gemstones sparkle.
Sphene astonishes.
Known mineralogically as titanite, sphene possesses one of the highest levels of natural dispersion—often called "fire"—of any gemstone, exceeding even that of diamond. As light enters the stone, it breaks into brilliant flashes of green, yellow, orange, and gold that seem to dance with even the slightest movement. It is this extraordinary optical performance that has made sphene a favorite among gemstone collectors and connoisseurs.
This exceptional 3.96-carat gemstone was mined in Pakistan, one of the world's premier sources for fine sphene, and has been examined by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
Its elegant octagonal cut highlights the stone's vivid brilliance while maintaining excellent proportions. Graded VVS clarity, it displays remarkable transparency for a gemstone that is rarely encountered in such fine condition.
Because sphene ranks approximately 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, it is best suited for pendants, earrings, brooches, or rings intended for occasional wear where the stone can be protected.
At Gilded Age Jewelry, we acquire gemstones not simply for their rarity, but for their ability to become extraordinary works of art. This sphene was selected for its exceptional optical performance and outstanding suitability as the centerpiece of a bespoke heirloom jewel.
